CIVILIANS TIDBIT Why is the uniforms flag worn with the field on the right? The starry field is displayed on the right on the uniforms in honor of fallen comrades that have fallen in battle. A newer tradition you see just the military as civilian uniforms display the field on the left. Stripes running from the field to the rear (to your back) represent blood from the battlefield. The proper way of saluting the flag is with your right hand.
